Home Again - Video

This video functions as a visual diary used to reflect on the concept of home. I created cinematic video clips that would reflect my worldview and also featured home videos of childhood birthdays. By featuring written word along with video, I aimed to encapsulate a somber mood that would create a narrative of longing, anticipatory grief, and ultimately, hope.

Silent Gesture - Performance

“A box was taped off on the floor - containing the artist, flowers, supplies, and a card on the wall that read ‘Home, red, love, change, stability, fear, longing.’ Another card told students to write at least one color and any words that they associated with that color.’”

Using the words each individual student wrote anonymously, I then created a bouquet which symbolized each person and their written statement … in silence.

A Celebration - Installation

This project is a celebration of years past, and a reflection on how birthdays bring people together. I created an immersive environment filled with objects and images related to birthdays, and highlighted how birthdays change as we grow older. A chronological display of photographs was hung with twine to illustrate how I’ve grown throughout my own life; I wanted to highlight my own birthdays as well as those of family and friends. Viewers were asked to help themselves to a slice of homemade cake while reading my personal notes and viewing photographs. Finally, I asked viewers to partake in the work by writing down their own responses to the prompts “Leave a birthday message to yourself,” “What do birthdays mean to you?” and “Leave a message for the birthday girl too.”

All of these projects were completed during the Fall 2022 semester of Art 318 - Video, Performance and Installation at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
